Es fellow del Magdalene College, en la Universidad de Cambridge, y de la British Academy. Fue profesor de historia moderna en la Universidad de Essex y professorial fellow del Mansfield College, en la Universidad de Oxford. Es fellow de la Royal Historical Society, la Society of Antiquaries, la Linnean Society y la American Antiquarian Society. Es autor de numerosos artículos y de libros como Bookscape: Geographies of Printing and Publishing in London before 1800 (2014), que reúne las conferencias Panizzi que dictó en 2010 en la British Library, y Publishing Business in Eighteenth-Century England (2014), The Business of Books: Booksellers and the English Book Trade 1450-1850 (2011), así como editor de The Oxford Illustrated History of the Book (2020) y, junto con Helen Small y Naomi Tadmor, de The Practice and Representation of Reading in England (2008).
